They're Just Little Things

I have small goals I’ve secretly set for myself. Secretly, meaning, until now, I haven’t written them down or told too many people about them. They’re more set in order to keep me going when life gets monotonous; they’re just little things. Like… putting the exact right amount of creamer in my coffee the first time around (no need to taste test) having exact change and being bold enough to stand at the counter until I count it because I know I have it, even if that means the person behind…

You Know You're a Nerd When…

you consider going to the library one of the most exciting things that’s happened to you since moving to England. But don’t judge too quickly because this isn’t just any library; it’s the Bodleian Library in the heart of Oxford.  More commonly known for its cameos in the Harry Potter films, this library is an equivalent to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., meaning it’s a copyright library, so any book or journal or newspaper or magazine printed in the UK must send a copy to the Bodleian…

A Few Visual Updates

This is where I live. This is what I’ve been doing. Please note the Harry Potter scarves, compliments of Ms. Lindsay Hall in honor of the “Pottering Around” tour we took on Halloween…

Places I love Here

– Uhuru: a small natural foods store on Cowley Road. They have awesome stuff I’ll probably never eat, like white chocolate with pepper corns. – G & D’s: a local-to-Oxford ice cream shop open till midnight (almost unheard of here) that serves flavors like lavender, really good except it was weird tasting a flavor in my mouth I’m used to smelling in hand cream… – Topshop: trendy clothing store. Let’s just say it’s good I don’t live near it, or I would be in big…

Coffee Corner…

Don’t laugh. This is what I’ve just decided to call a new section of my blog. I’ve written three story-like posts so far and have decided to change it up even though my original goal with this blog was to keep it strictly anecdotal.  So Coffee Corner is where I will ask you a question or raise an issue for you to think about (maybe over your morning coffee?) and then feel free to post a comment regarding it or just come up with your own opinion in your own head and feel…

Bill's Shoe Repair

Bill has owned his small shoe and boot repair shop off of Hollow Way for 31 years. “That’s older than you are, you know,” he told me as I stood on the other side of the counter waiting for him to find the boot I had dropped off the week before – the left one of my favorite pair that I have apparently begun to wear out. Bill is the quintessential old British man: small frame, white hair, big round glasses that make his eyes twice the size they probably are and, the best part, a…

I Fell Off My Bike

And I didn’t just stumble a little or wobble – I wiped out, bit it hard core, crashed suddenly in slow motion on the sidewalk (aka “pavement” in English talk) on a busy and main road called Cowley, which is full of experienced cyclists that were passing me up and speeding to work or school as if they had been born riding a bicycle in city traffic. I don’t know which part was more embarrassing… The fact I learned to ride a bike at age 5 and have been hopping curbs probably since age…

English Lessons

I’ve always wanted an excuse to blog. While I struggled with the idea of publicly processing my day or overconfidently assuming innocent internet browsers would care enough to actually read a sentence or two, I secretly believed my life was interesting enough to write about. Maybe not novel-worthy, maybe not newspaper-article-worthy and maybe not even reality-T.V.-show worthy but at least blog-worthy, right? “Right,” I decided, and so I began this blog. My blog-worthy reasons: I just moved from the United States to England to attend graduate school and…
